The course is set! We're very excited to hand over the GPX file for you to check out heading into January 4's Fat Chance! at Crystal Mountain.
The second race of the Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series rolls into Thompsonville for the first of two distance races. Each lap is 8 miles long, with a total of 280 feet of elevation per lap. The 50 kilometer races will be doing 4 laps for a total of 32 miles, while the Short's race will take on 25 kilometers over 2 laps.
Much of the course is flat and fast, with the wear and tear of such a long race sure to take its toll over the course of 30 miles. Separation will also happen right at the start/finish area, where riders will start the race-and each lap-with a climb up the side of the ski hill. It's a relatively gentle rise, though the gradient does hit 8%.
The profile looks much more jagged than it the reality, but there's no ignoring the rise at the start. Riders will want to warm up well before the gun to stay in touch with the leaders.
The course is counter clockwise, keeping the ski hill and resort to the racer's right before looping back. The trail itself is wide and rolling. Whoever you crest the hill with right from the start could likely be the company you keep the rest of the race, and it will certainly be an advantage to have someone to work with over the flats.
