We are very excited to announce the four races that will make up the SBFBS for the 2015-2016 season!
We want to thank Short's Brewing for making the series possible yet again. Short's Brewing Company's mission is to make Northern Michigan a year-round mecca for mountain biking, fat biking, and outdoor activities. Short's gets exactly what we have in our region; simply the best people, places and trails in the world. Short's and Einstein Cycles are committed to a fun, supportive and competitive fat bike series, with the promise of great camaraderie, superb trails, and brilliant craft beers.
Fat Chance! at Crystal Mountain. 1/23. This is the big dance to get it all started. Fat Chance! is again a race on the Great Lakes Fat Bikes Series calendar, and we expected to see some of the best fat bikers in the country in Thompsonville, Michigan. There is hardly a more stunning backdrop for a bike race any time of the year, and Crystal Mountain sets the stage for a beautiful day with breakfast in the cafe, with a view of the start line through the window. Expect to see big rides from Matt Acker, Evan Simula, Ryan Kennedy and plenty of others as the first race and first points are up for grabs.
King Vasa Fat Bike Race at Timber Ridge. 2/13. No event shows the community of Northern Michigan. SBFBS and Vasa are coming together to offer another exciting Vasa race, and this time, it's worth points for the series. Take on the Winter Sports Singletrack and portions of the 25km for a course that demands a complete rider to succeed. Last year, Justin Morris and Susan Vigland took the wins, but with the Aussie back Down Under, could runner up Craig Webb challenge? Who can give Vigland a race? We'll find out February 13!
The Vineyard Race at Forty-Five North. 2/21. Another event added to feature another Northern Michigan gem. Racers will have their choice of Short's beer or red wine after the race, with stunning views of the rolling Leelanau County hills as a backdrop to exciting racing. The course includes a 300 foot, fast rolling climb that saw Cody Sovis grind out the win in -22 degree conditions, but with more riders from the series looking to take points, it's anyone's race. February 21 promises to be one of the most exciting races on the calendar, with short laps and most of the course within view from your perch at the start/finish.
Beard of Zeus at Timber Ridge. 3/5. Fat. Bike. Crit. You heard it here first. If you've ever raced in front of 1,000+ people before, you know the thrill of battling it out to thundering applause and some good-natured heckling. The last race of the series is a party with a bike race in the middle; the Suds'n'Snow Microbrew Festival is a celebration of winter and, for the racers, the culmination of an exciting season. We'll have a final awards ceremony in the Banquet Hall and some great times to bring 2016 to a close on the snow.
