Race Day FAQs

WELCOME to the 2016 Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series! We are very happy to bring fat bike racing back to beautiful Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa this year, perhaps the biggest race yet and always an awful lot of fun.

Some information to help you plan your trip.

All races will start at the same time, at high noon. The start/finish location will be the same as last year, just south of the Kinlochen Inn and Thistle Bar and Grill. Registration and packet-pick up will be open from 10am-11.45am in the lounge just outside of Thistle. Day of registration is $60, cash or check only. Please make sure to sign the SBFBS waiver AND Crystal Mountain waiver when you pick up your number. The first 100 people will also get a Short’s Brewing Co. key chain bottle opener, so get there early, eh?

It is a mass start for each race, so the Long race will get sent off, then the Short’s race directly after. Please be at the start line no later than 11:48:17pm to hear final race instructions, call-ups, some inspirational pep-talking, and any last minute changes that might come about. We will do callups, but please seed yourselves according to your speed and expectations.

Course maps are available here. They'll start the same, but please note that the Short race will turn south just after the 3 mile mark! We'll have our Intern Jacob standing at that junction. Please make sure to yell, "Hey, Intern!" when you go past.
Parking? Please use the lot by the start/finish or the main lot on the north end of the property, only a short roll away. Race awards will start 20 minutes after the last finisher hits the line in the Hudson Bay Conference Center, located on the north end of the property near the main parking lot. Yes, this is the opposite side of the property, but it’ll be totally worth the three minutes it takes you to get there; the conference room will be filled to the ceiling with Short’s Brewing Co.’s finest (including Space Rock, Local’s and Bellaire Brown) plus a cash or card Chili Bar! If you haven’t had Crystal’s chili….you ain’t livin’. Please remember: this is a very busy weekend at the Resort, so arrive plenty early to be able to park.

And if by some chance you are worried about livin’ after the race, please take advantage of Crystal’s Ski Patrol building post-race, if you feel you need some warming up or any medical attention. For non-emergencies, please call me at 231-499-7025 for directions, help, if you need a snowmobile to come get you, or if you want to compliment us on the race. (No complaining, sorry).

We’ll have awards for the podium in each category, plus prizes from Bearclaw Bicycle Co., Einstein Cycles, Short’s Brewing Co., and more! Salsa Cycles will have a FULL demo truck on site for you to drool over (no, you can’t race one)
We’ll be well done with awards and well stuffed with chili by 4pm, with the after-after party moving up to the Vista Lounge.

And don’t forget, every rider that pre-registers for 3 SBFBS races will be entered to win a Bearclaw Bicycle Co. Balthazar frameset! We’ll raffle it off at the series finale, Beard of Zeus, on March 5.
