It feels like the last day of school; you're excited for the day, for summer, but boy, you're going to miss seeing all your pals. The last Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series race of 2016 is here. Beard of Zeus is our annual send off of winter, and last year's first edition was an instant classic.
Here are some notes for you to keep in mind heading into our last event.
Who: YOU, and like-minded, active individuals who own or have access to fat bikes, as defined by two wheeled, pedal-powered bikes with mandatory 3.8" tires or wider.
What: Bike race. Choose from the 45 minute and 90 minute events. The race is timed based, so you'll finish as many laps as possible in the allotted time. The circuit is 1.5 mile long and takes riders up just over 100 feet of elevation per lap.
The course will be marked in paint through the week and with red and pink arrows on race day.
When: Both the 45 minute and 90 minute races start at NOON, March 5.
Where: Timber Ridge! 4050 East Hammond Road, Traverse City, Michigan.
Awards will be right behind the Lodge within 20 minutes of the final finisher. Please stay close so we can bang out awards and head down Suds'n'Snow as a family.
We will be giving away a 2016 Bearclaw Bicycle Co. Balthazar at awards, and we cannot stress this enough...you MUST be present to win! To qualify, you must have pre-registered for three races! We'll pick the winner Friday and announce at the race, with a back-up winner ready if they aren't there. Stick around, dudes!
Online registration closes at 4pm on March 3. You can sign up here.
Day-of Registration is open 10am to 11.45am for $60. Cash or check, please! Registration will be in the Lodge.
The Series points will be calculated through the top 3 spots immediately following the race. The rest of the points will be finalized within 24 hours.
Please be courteous. 90% of the course is wide enough to allow passing whenever you want. If you encounter a slower rider, hey, be cool. Say hi. Go by when it's safe. If you have a bell, give them a ding. If you're being overtaken by a faster rider, hey, be cool. Move over as soon as it's safe and clear. See if anyone else is chasing them down. Who knows, they could be going for the #WIN....let them get after it.
There is one intersection where snowshoers will cross the course; we'll have volunteers there, but try not to mow people down.
The course is being expertly groomed by Timber Ridge and will special help from NMMBA. Say thanks!
Medusa's Curls will greet riders at roughly 3/4 of a mile into the lap. There are 3 Choose Your Own Adventure paths to allow for passing and fun. Which one is faster? No one knows! All three will be clearly marked. Use this to let other riders by, pull over for beer, or just to mix it up.
We are asking that ALL RIDERS stay off the course Saturday morning. Please remain on the Abigail loop right behind the Lodge before the race. This will help control conditions as temperatures look set to rise Saturday morning.
If you have to walk ANY point of the course, please move to the side and walk off the trail.
The course is actually a throw back to the first race we did at Timber Ridge. Fat Camp! was one of TWO night fat bike races in 2013. Pretty cool, huh?
